learning by doing ...
I’ve been working through five modules of an Australian Writers’ Centre course - FICTION ESSENTIALS: STRUCTURE. At the same time, I listened to an AWC podcast where Polly Phillips spoke about her new psychological thriller - The Reunion.
Polly was asked how she planned out this story and she described pretty much exactly, the process that my course has just spelt out.
Well, that was interesting to me, because at the time when I worked through Module 4 I thought - this is a lot of bother.
I did put pen to paper however, planning out my third novel THICKER THAN WATER, destined to be a great Australian novel. I was amazed to see the saggy bits in the middle of the storyline jumping out at me. The holes in the subplots also made themselves immediately known to me.
I’ve always been a person to learn by doing. Just goes to show it’s never too late to learn and perhaps an old dog can bag a few new tricks.
I’m convinced!
